Barred owl house placement. You can buy one premade or build your own using this free screech owl box plan and untreated pine or cedar. This involves placing boxes in pairs on poles 15 to 25 feet apart. Barred owls make distinctive calls. Placement of your owl shack is important.
The further you place the box from human activity the better your chances of having an owl use it it should be no closer than 150 feet. I m a real bird watching fan and i participate in project feederwatch i m also an advanced amateur photographer i love taking pictures of birds at my feeder and in the spring i ve been known to spend hours watching and photographing the activity at our bluebird box. Nesting platforms can also be placed in barns steeples or silos if the owls will be able to access them easily. So don t place a nest box on a building or a bare pole.

Place a barn owl nest box at least 15 20 feet high but be sure the opening is shaded from the sun and wind. The house also should be at least 15 feet off the ground.

Face the owl shack in any direction except to the north where cold winter breezes are not welcome. If the box is mounted on a pole use a baffle to prevent cats raccoons and other predators from reaching it.
Place the box 10 to 15 feet up in a tree. Attach two of the three brackets to a vertical tree limb with a total of four heavy nails or wood screws. Mark out the draw ing onto the plywood and cut the pieces. Scatter untreated wood chips on the floor of the owl box.
Pick a tree that is more than 1 foot in diameter to hang the owl house and hang the owl house on the part of the tree facing north or that is not directly facing the sun. The rooftop needs to be 10 feet above the ground or higher. Or you can put two boxes back to back on a single pole. Place 3 4 of wood chips in bottom of box.
Birds such as tree swallows and bluebirds will nest closely to one another although they will drive away others of their own species.
